Impromptu Life

Do you ever just feel like you have NO room on your calendar to fit anything else in?
I often say “cancelled plans are my favorite.” Ask my sister- she knows this all to well about me. But what happens when you say yes to SO many things and NONE of them get cancelled?

Current situation:
I book out my calendar WAY in advance. I’m talking, my calendar is filled out from today until well into the new year. The first things I add in: Church activities and date nights. After that: school commitments, sports, mandatory appointments and a few days to stay home. Yes, I plan our days to stay home. If I don’t, we never get the chance to just be. These days, like church and date nights are immovable. Then I plan work, time with family/friends and everything else.

Needless to say, our calendar is PACKED! And usually I can count on at least a few things being cancelled or changed in a month. That gives us another free day to just be. Usually cancelled plans means we have time to go to the lake, southern Utah for a day trip or a 4wheeling excursion… Last week we went to the state capital. We really can just do whatever sounds like fun or maybe do something we wanted to, but didn’t have time on the calendar to make it happen. I love the “down days” and should really plan more of them… But we’d never see anyone else if I did. It’s a sad reality.

So what happens when NOTHING is cancelled or postponed?
Well- the husband steps in, loads up the trailer and we forget all of the plans previously agreed to. Then we find a place with no cell service and set up camp. We play ring toss, ladder-ball and take the dogs for a hike. We jump on the RZR to explore God’s creations and drop rocks down abandoned mine shafts. We simply take time to enjoy life and each other.

I’m always grateful when he requires me to step back. Forget about field trips and housework. Forget a Costco run, projects at home, cutting the grass… Sometimes he just knows when I need a break and he creates it for me. We cancel all those plans that weren’t cancelled by anyone else.

He knows me so well and I appreciate this husband of mine! Because this past weekend, I needed to sit and do nothing. We all did.
Also, he picked me a *bucket of wild flowers. Don’t tell anyone he’s sweet…
*And if you don’t get my “Bucket” joke, take a down day to watch Keeping Up With Appearances- you won’t regret it.

And because I love cancelled plans and I’m sure I’m not the only one… to all of you that didn’t hear from me this weekend- You are welcome for the time back on your calendar! I hope you enjoyed your weekend and that you took that time to “just be” instead of running around with me.
I don’t often cancel plans, so take this one as a win? I know I would have if you would have cancelled on me.

Now we are back to a full week of places to be… Not saying I won’t enjoy driving my kids to every commitment they have- I will. I love talking to them in the car. But MAN, I spend a lot of time getting to and from and going nowhere lately.
Hurry up and wait. Seems to be my life now that my kids are older.

Can anyone else relate?
