The Unfiltered Truth About Back-Office Operations

Published by

If you looked at my social media feed over the last few weeks, you would think it was business as usual.

The reality? I have been completely sick in bed for 11 days.

No filter, no polished office background, just me under the covers trying to rest and recover. Nobody looking at my business online would have known unless I explicitly said it.

That is not because I am hiding or faking a perfect life. It is because I built a business that supports my actual life, rather than building a life to constantly feed a business machine. When chaos or illness hits your household, your internal operations should hold the fort so you can actually heal, rest and show up without actually showing up.

🦩 The Personal Habits That Keep Me Grounded

When feeds get flooded and chaotic, I rely on strict personal boundaries to keep my sanity intact. Here is what that looks like in my daily routine:

  • The 10-minute scroll timer: I do not let myself mindlessly drift through social media. I set a strict 10-minute timer in the morning to hop on, engage, support other small business owners in our area and then get off.
  • Showing up in real life: Not everything I do happens behind a screen. I check in on friends, volunteer and stay active in our local community. None of that is done for a quick sales pitch. It is for my life. But here is the business reality: when you show up for people in real life, they remember you. Even if they never hire you, they become the neighbor who refers their friend directly to your door.
  • Building smooth back-office systems: I timeblock my days, work ahead and build clear processes so it is effortless for people to get in touch with me. I show up when I say I will because I actually care about serving people, not just chasing the next dollar.

🦩 Real Systems Buy You Real Rest

We are not meant to be chained to a desk or a phone screen 24/7. When you set up clear boundaries, streamline your process and focus on genuine human relationships over social media analytics, your business stands tall even when you have to step away.

If your current business setup falls apart the second you catch a cold or need a day off, your systems are telling on you.

Take a breath, look at your calendar for tomorrow and start putting time-blocks around the things that actually matter: your health, your family and your local community. It’s ok to be honest about where you need to improve, make changes to make things easier in the long run and ask for help.
