🦩 The Best Teachers I’ve Ever Had
The best teachers I’ve ever had are my kids. When we slow down and the schedules loosen, I notice things I would miss otherwise. Their natural rhythms show me who we really are as a family. They wake up happy just to be. They aren’t rushed or anxious. They are just present and that tells me everything.
🦩 Values Don’t Disappear Without a Schedule
Even without a strict routine, my kids move with intention. They straighten the house without being asked and they start conversations that actually matter. Most importantly, the things we care about most don’t disappear just because the structure isn’t being enforced.
They still read their Bibles, they still pray and they still practice gratitude. The meaningful parts of our lifestyle stick. God being front and center gives all of us certainty in who we are regardless of what is happening around us. He is the authority we follow and that shared foundation shapes how we resolve conflict and show up for one another. My kids aren’t afraid to speak up or sing into a karaoke machine without hesitation. They don’t look to us or their friends for constant validation. Watching them has taught me to stop seeking it from others too.
🦩 Curiosity Over Perfection
My kids have taught me what it looks like to be curious without overthinking. When an idea sparks, they act. My youngest did an entire study on grasshoppers just to know why their legs had spikes. She caught one, wrote down 30 questions and researched the answers before reporting back to the family. We are all basically experts on grasshoppers now!
They push boundaries without apologizing for existing. They aren’t wrecked when they get pushback. They experiment freely, fail quickly and clean up their own messes. They build Lego masterpieces because failure doesn’t scare them; it’s just part of the process. Just this morning my oldest learned how to say and write “thank you” in Japanese just for the fun of it. No permission needed. Every time I witness that, I’m reminded how much adults overcomplicate growth.
🦩 Space to Fail
When we slow down, I see how deeply rooted our values are. I see independence paired with responsibility and faith paired with curiosity. I see kids who know exactly who they are. So much of that comes from being allowed space to try, space to fail and space to explore without someone hovering or rushing them along.
Parenting has stripped away my ability to be selfish in the best way possible. It forces me to pay attention and model the kind of life I want them to grow into. On the days I doubt myself, I’m reminded that God’s got my back. Even in the slow moments. Actually, especially in the slow moments.
🦩 Final Thoughts
Slowing down doesn’t mean falling behind. For us, it’s where our true selves live. It’s where confidence grows and faith becomes visible instead of theoretical. My kids remind me daily that structure matters, but so does allowing time for boredom. When the foundation is strong, the rhythm can shift without everything falling apart.
When was the last time you truly slowed down and paid attention to what it revealed about your family or your work? I’d love to hear your thoughts. If you like the inside scoop on my life, follow along or send a message.
