Before I Ever Commit to a Client, I Schedule a Call
It is not a pitch. It is not a salesy moment. It is a conversation.
We talk through exactly what you already have in place: your social media accounts, your website, your branding, your licensing and your goals. I want to hear the right-now goals and the “someday” ones too. Sometimes the conversation stays strictly on business. Other times it drifts into personal territory and honestly, I do not mind that one bit.
I am listening closely. I am looking for clients who are driven to learn. I want the people who can receive feedback without shutting down. I am looking for those who are willing to take constructive criticism and actually do something with it. I am paying attention to how you talk about your business, your customers and your team. I am listening for your values. I am noticing whether the conversation flows easily or if it feels forced.
Because here is the truth: I do not take on every client that comes my way. I am picky on purpose.
🦩 Fit Matters More Than Urgency
(I care about your business the same way I care about my own)
I would rather wait for the right fit than rush into the wrong one. When I work with someone, I am investing my time, my energy and my creativity into their business and their life. I am learning your goals, posting your photos and helping shape how the world sees you.
When a connection is there, I actually look forward to our calls. I get excited about your ideas. I even have to fight the urge to say “I love you” before hanging up. I actually told a client I loved him once before ending a call. He will never let me live that down and honestly, that is fair. But that is how I know it is working. When clients fit naturally into my life, I genuinely care about them with my whole heart.
🦩 The Red Flags You Might Not See
Sometimes the red flags do not show up during that first conversation. They show up later when I start looking through your public accounts. More often than not, the red flags do not come from the business owner. They come from the employees.
I have seen accounts where an employee is clearly marketing themselves through a company’s social media instead of marketing the actual business. That is a massive red flag for me. Even bigger? When the business owner does not have full access to their own accounts or a clue what is online representing their company.
Please hear me on this: you must own your assets. You need to own your social media, your website and ALL of your logins. ALL of it. You need to know how to manage your accounts well enough to remove an admin if you have to. Including me. If I ever become a problem, you should be able to remove my access without a panic. That is being a responsible owner. If I see this issue, I will tell you. We can fix it, but it often means starting over and rebuilding trust with each platform. Also, I will teach you how to add and how to remove admin access- so don’t stress if you don’t already know how.
🦩 When I Say No, It Is to Protect Everyone
(Boundaries are not personal; they are professional)
Saying no is never my favorite part, but it is necessary. If I do not feel aligned with your values, your industry or your messaging, I will not be able to serve you well. If I am uncomfortable sharing your work with my own audience or researching your space, that is a problem for both of us.
I have boundaries and you should too. When I say no, it is about protection. I am protecting my brand and I am protecting your business from forcing something that isn’t meant to work.
🦩 Final Thoughts
I would rather work deeply with a few clients I can truly serve than spread myself thin saying yes to everyone. Alignment creates better work, better relationships and better outcomes for everyone involved. And that is always the goal.
If you are looking for someone who cares just as much about the fit as they do about the strategy, we might get along just fine. Let’s build something bold.
Talk soon,
L
